FAQ
What is direct-pay care?
A direct-pay care practice is a healthcare model that removes insurance companies from the equation, allowing consumers to pay their providers directly for services. This model prioritizes personalized care, transparency, and accessibility, shifting the focus from insurance-driven, volume-based medicine to proactive, whole-person health management.
At Mula, our direct-pay model allows us to provide:
Longer, More Personalized Visits – Without the restrictions of insurance billing, we spend more time understanding your unique health needs and developing customized wellness plans.
Transparent Pricing – There are no hidden fees, co-pays, or surprise bills. Our membership-based structure includes a clear explanation of services, so you know exactly what you're paying for.
Proactive & Preventative Care – Unlike conventional medicine, which often focuses on treating illness, direct-pay care is preventative, emphasizing lifestyle medicine, Ayurveda, root-cause healing, and longevity practices to optimize health before disease develops.
More Control Over Your Health – You make decisions about your care without interference from insurance companies dictating what treatments, labs, or services are covered.
Is Mula a Primary care practice?
Mula offers a direct-pay, whole-health care model that may serve as a primary source of care for those who align with an integrative and natural approach to health.
We provide comprehensive health assessments, in-depth care planning, and continuous clinician access—all designed to support disease prevention, longevity, and natural healing. Unlike conventional primary care, we do not prescribe medications or focus on disease management through pharmaceuticals. Instead, we emphasize root-cause healing, proactive health strategies, and personalized lifestyle medicine to help individuals maintain optimal well-being and avoid unnecessary medical interventions.
For those seeking a drug-free, holistic approach, Mula can be their first point of care, offering a structured membership program to keep regular attention on your health and wellness.
We recognize that some individuals may still choose to maintain a relationship with a conventional primary care provider for urgent or specialized medical needs and we are happy to collaborate with your PCP. However, for those who see integrative and holistic care as their preferred approach, Mula offers a complete, proactive alternative to conventional sick-care.
What's the difference between traditional and conventional medicine?
The terms traditional medicine and conventional medicine refer to different approaches to healthcare, though they sometimes overlap in practice. Here's a breakdown of their key differences:
Traditional Medicine
Definition: Traditional medicine refers to long-established healing systems that have been practiced for centuries, often rooted in cultural and regional knowledge that has been scientifically validated with modern research and testing.
Examples: Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Indigenous healing practices, Ancestral Medicine, Unani, and African traditional medicine.
Principles:
Holistic approach, considering mind, body, and spirit.
Uses natural remedies, such as herbs, dietary therapies, and lifestyle practices.
Often based on empirical knowledge passed down through generations.
Focuses on disease prevention and restoring balance.
Accepts evidence based research available across time when its proven to be safe and effective
Conventional Medicine (also known as Western or Allopathic Medicine)
Definition: Conventional medicine is the modern medical system widely practiced in hospitals and clinics today. It relies on evidence-based treatments, pharmaceuticals, and surgical interventions.
Examples: Biomedicine, pharmaceuticals, surgery, radiation therapy, and modern diagnostic tools like MRI and blood tests.
Principles:
Primarily treats symptoms and diseases using standardized medical protocols.
Utilizes clinical trials and scientific research to validate treatments.
Emphasizes acute care and emergency interventions.
Heavily dependent on technology and pharmaceuticals.
Many healthcare practitioners now combine both approaches in Integrative Medicine, using conventional medical treatments alongside traditional healing practices such as Ayurveda, acupuncture, and herbal medicine. This hybrid model acknowledges the benefits of both systems—leveraging the strengths of modern medicine while honoring the wisdom of traditional healing.
However, many conventional medicine practitioners have no training in traditional medicine, yet claim to practice or integrate it into their care model. This is where Mula is different. We are dually trained in traditional and conventional medicine, which allows us to offer you with comprehensive, competent, and credentialed care that integrates the best of both worlds.
Can I contact Mula for urgent care or questions?
Mula is not an urgent care or emergency service provider. While our members enjoy direct access to our expert clinicians, we do not offer 24/7 emergency support.
If you have an urgent medical concern, we recommend seeking immediate care through an urgent care center or hospital. For non-urgent questions, you can reach out through our secure messaging platform, and we’ll respond during our business hours.
Do you accept Insurance?
No, and that’s intentional. Mula is a direct-pay practice because we believe your healthcare should be in your hands. Our model prioritizes your freedom of choice with transparent pricing and open access to the care that best supports your well-being.
The rising healthcare costs go beyond the price of medical services—they’re inflated by insurance fees, copays, approvals, denials, and administrative overhead. By eliminating these barriers, Mula’s direct-pay approach makes care more accessible, transparent, and personalized. No surprise bills, no delays—just direct access to the preventative and root-cause care you deserve.
Will I still need Health Insurance if I become a Mula Member?
Having health insurance is a very personal choice. Many people use health insurance for chronic condition management, specialty care, surgery, and emergencies. Others opt out of traditional health insurance and supplement with prevention-focused memberships like what we offer at Mula. There’s growing interest in health-sharing plans as well, which can be used to pay for services ranging from routine wellness visits to hospital stays and surgeries.
Ultimately, the decision depends on your health needs, openness to try something different, and financial situation. Feel free to ask us questions, we are happy to offer helpful information to assist you in navigating your options.
Can I use my HSA or FSA account to pay for services?
Most likely, yes! Many of our services qualify for HSA/FSA spending, but we recommend checking with your employer or account administrator. We’re happy to provide itemized receipts or necessity letters if needed.
What forms of payment do you accept?
We accept cash, Zelle, all major credit cards, and HSA/FSA cards. No insurance claims, no hidden fees—just a clear and simple payment process so you can focus on your health.
Are my records shared with health insurance or pharmaceutical companies?
No. Mula operates outside of the conventional healthcare system, so your records are not automatically shared with health insurance or pharmaceutical companies. Your health information remains confidential and is only used to support your care. If you ever need documentation for personal use or to share with another provider, we will provide them at your request only.
What is your cancellation policy?
Mula encourages a membership-based model to ensure continuity of care and a personalized experience. Our cancellation policy is as follows:
Memberships: We require a 30-day notice for membership cancellations. This allows us to finalize your care plan and ensure a smooth transition. Membership fees are non-refundable but will remain active through the end of your billing cycle. We will not refund any portion of your already paid membership fees, even if you have not fully utilized your benefits.
Services and Appointments: If you need to reschedule or cancel an appointment or service, we ask for at least 48 hours notice. Late cancellations or missed appointments will not receive a refund.
Retreats: Due to the planning involved in our retreats, cancellations made 14 days before your scheduled retreat will receive a full refund and cancellations made 5 days before your scheduled retreat will receive 50% refund. Cancellations after this period are non-refundable, but may be eligible for rescheduling, depending on the circumstance and availability.

Are Mula Clinicians licensed?
Yes! Our team includes advanced practice nurses, pharmacists, holistic health practitioners, medical advisors, registered nurses, and therapists—each with many years of expertise in direct patient care, conventional healthcare, integrative medicine, and Ayurveda. We have a deep understanding of pharmaceuticals, holistic therapies, and root-cause medicine, allowing us to provide a comprehensive, prevention-oriented approach to your well-being.
With the recent rise in interest in wellness, many unqualified individuals are presenting themselves as health "experts", which can lead to unsafe or incomplete guidance. At Mula, we believe that being dually trained, educated, licensed in conventional healthcare and traditional medicine is what sets us apart.
Our integrative approach ensures that your care is rooted in both scientific evidence and the wisdom of time-tested healing practices.
Is it possible to cure my chronic disease or condition?
Reversing diseases are possible and most chronic diseases are preventable. However, every person is different, and outcomes depend on various factors, including your condition's type and stage, your commitment to lifestyle changes, genetics and proneness to disorders, lifestyle, and how your body responds to care.
Mula focuses on addressing root causes, purification, and rejuvenation, rather than just managing symptoms. Many people experience significant improvements - and in some cases, reversal of chronic conditions through targeted nutrition, detoxification, stress management, and other holistic therapies.
However, we do not make blanket promises or guarantee specific results. Our goal is to empower you with tools and guidance to support your body’s natural healing ability.
Does Mula Manage chronic diseases?
Yes, but not in the conventional sense. At Mula, we focus on addressing root causes and supporting your body’s natural healing processes rather than just managing symptoms. Our approach blends lifestyle medicine, functional medicine, and evidence-based integrative health strategies to optimize well-being and reduce symptoms.
That said, we are not a replacement for disease specialists. If your condition requires medications, ongoing monitoring, or acute interventions, we encourage collaboration with your existing medical team and/or qualified disease specialist.
Will Mula Help me get off my prescription Medications?
Maybe, but that decision should always be made with your prescribing provider. Our goal is to support your body’s optimal function, which may reduce or eliminate the need for certain medications in some cases. Through personalized nutrition, detoxification, stress management, and holistic therapies, many people experience improvements that could allow for adjustments to their prescriptions.
However, we never advise stopping or changing medications without consulting your prescribing provider. If reducing or eliminating medications is your goal, please let us know and we can work alongside your conventional healthcare team to create a safe and effective plan.
Does Mula Prescribe medications?
No, we do not prescribe medications, but we have extensive clinical experience in pharmaceutical use and its impact on overall health. Our team includes seasoned healthcare professionals who assess medication side effects, interactions, and overall influence on well-being.
We recognize that some conditions require medications, and our goal is not to eliminate them but to take a holistic, informed approach to care. If lifestyle changes, medicinal foods, and herbal supplements can reduce medication reliance, we’ll guide you through the process safely.
Does Mula order labs?
Yes, we order labs as part of our Whole-Health Membership or Consultation to provide a deeper, prevention-focused view of your health. Instead of just looking for disease once it has developed, we assess key markers that indicate early imbalances—such as inflammation, metabolic function, nutrient deficiencies, and hormone health—so we can intervene before symptoms escalate. These insights help us craft a truly personalized approach to optimizing your well-being.
We do ask that you provide us with any recent lab results to avoid unnecessary duplication of care and costs. While we don’t bill insurance for lab work, our testing costs are already included in your membership fees, which may be eligible for HSA/FSA reimbursement.
Are Mula's products FDA approved?
The majority of the FDA's funding comes largely from the pharmaceutical and medical device industries. Naturally derived substances like plants, herbs, foods, and spices do not go through the same FDA approval process as pharmaceuticals, despite plants being used for thousands of years to support health and well-being.
At Mula, we use plants that have been proven to be effective and safe, drawing from both modern research and time-tested traditional medicine. We do not rely solely on studies funded by the "industry", where over 50% of clinical trial research is influenced by pharmaceutical and/or medical device companies. Instead, we honor age-old wisdom as a legitimate source of truth, selecting herbs and supplements based on both historical use, ancestral medicine, and modern research validation.
All our herbs and supplements are organic, sustainably harvested, and of the highest quality. While they may not carry an FDA approval, they are chosen for their safety and efficacy. If you have questions, we’re happy to share more about our sourcing and quality standards.
How does Mula work with with my PCP or conventional Healthcare team?
We support you being in control of your health. If you choose to share information with your Primary Care Physician (PCP) or other members of your conventional healthcare team, we will support you by providing insights from your whole-health assessments, lab findings, and personalized wellness care plan. You decide what to share and when—our role is to equip you with the knowledge and tools to have informed discussions.
For those without a PCP, we can serve as your primary point of contact for whole-person care, guiding you with a proactive and integrative approach to optimizing your health. We partner with many primary care, integrative medicine, men's health, and women's health provider's in the area and can happily refer you to them for additional care and consultation if desired. It's all about YOU!
What if I need to see a specialist or be admitting to the hospital?
If you require specialist care or hospitalization, your existing health insurance (if applicable) or an alternative coverage option, such as a health-sharing plan, would typically apply. While Mula focuses on prevention and whole-person health, we are not a replacement for emergency or specialty medical care.
We encourage our clients to maintain access to necessary healthcare services. If you need guidance on integrating Mula’s care into your broader health strategy, we’re happy to help navigate your options.
